Kamala Harris presents herself as a change agent who will “turn the tide” and offer “a new path forward.”“, a move that falls far short of embracing her role in the Biden White House.

Inflation has been tamed. Illegal immigration has stabilized. Violent crime has declined. In theory, it's a perfect recipe for electoral success. Still, it's a gift that Democratic candidate Kamala Harris appears reluctant to accept.

Larry Sabato, director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia, said: “A new path? She was part of a very successful administration and was named vice president by Joe Biden and then essentially his successor.

“But she needs to pretend she’s charting a new path because she can’t afford to be too closely aligned with Biden. I know a person on the internal campaign team who cringe every time Harris and Biden have to appear together because the image reinforces the bond that they don't want people to make. It’s nonsensical.”

As sitting vice president, Harris hopes to avoid a repeat of Republican President George H. W. Bush's fate in 1992. Economic indicators improved in the spring and summer, but it was too late to save him from defeat by Bill Clinton, whose chief strategist, James Carville, summed it up memorably: “It's the economy, stupid.”

Bill Galston, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution think tank in Washington DC, said: “When it comes to the economy, people trust their own eyes and will make judgments based on that.” This is a lesson I have learned throughout the six presidential campaigns What I've been through has learned: If you have statistics on the one hand and personal experience on the other, it's not a competition.”

Donald Trump quoted the lyrics of a song that supposedly warned against immigration during his speech in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Trump read the lyrics to “The Snake,” written in 1963 by civil rights activist Oscar Brown. Five years later, the song was a hit for soul singer Al Wilson.

In Trump's interpretation, it serves as a cautionary tale about the supposed danger posed by immigrants. The former president told the allegorical story of a woman who foolishly embraces a dangerous snake.
