McDonald's Boo Buckets, a beloved tradition of the Halloween season, are officially returning for 2024 — but this year they look a little different.

In an announcement Monday, the Chicago-based burger chain said the iconic Halloween buckets will be available again at McDonald's Happy Meals starting in mid-October. Additionally, new bucket designs were unveiled for 2024 and the nostalgic buckets would receive a “refresh.”

However, some on social media didn't like the updated look.

The four buckets will feature new monster designs and will be available in white, orange, green and a “brand new color, blue.”

McDonald's Boo Buckets also come with themed stickers for a “truly monstrous makeover.”

First introduced in 1986, trick-or-treat buckets known as “Boo Buckets” were a staple of spooky season Happy Meals for several years before “disappearing for a while.” After a long absence, three iconic retro basketball games returned for 2022 on October 18th.

They also returned in 2023, with the same vintage designs – monster, skeleton, mummy – as well as a purple Vampire bucket, a nod to the “OG Purple Boo Bucket.”

Last month, rumors of new designs for 2024 began circulating, leaving some on social media pining for the retro designs.

“I think you all misunderstood why we liked the boo bucket thing,” one commenter wrote in a September Instagram post in which the design was leaked. “We like the nostalgia.”

“Meh,” said another. “It’s the nostalgia we want!”

On Monday's McDonald's Instagram post, dozens of comments echoed that sentiment.

“Please stop changing the look and bring back the old school 90s styles,” one comment said.

“I don’t like the designs,” read another. “You should have stuck with the old ones.”

Other commenters just seemed happy that the Boo Buckets were coming back.

“WAIT,” one comment said, while another said, “They are sooo cute.”

According to the announcement, the buckets will be available in McDonald's stores starting October 15 and will be available “while supplies last.”
