Todd Bowles is one of the NFL's best coaches on the defensive side of the ball. He has made a career of leading impressive stopping units that strike fear into the hearts of opposing quarterbacks.

The 60-year-old has been working in football for over 25 years. He initially started at the college level before breaking into the NFL in 2000. He has been a fixture in the league ever since, spending time with numerous organizations including the Browns, Jets, Cowboys and Eagles.

The Buccaneers head coach is in his third season as head coach with the Tampa Bay club. He first joined the team in 2019, but took over in 2022 after Bruce Arians left that position. Tampa Bay has won the NFC South every season under Bowles and is looking to make it a third straight season in 2024.

Although Bowles has been in the league for quite some time, he is currently in his second term as a full-time head coach. Where else was he the secondary boss?

Here's everything you need to know about Bowles' time as a head coach in the NFL.

Todd Bowles' coaching timeline

Miami Dolphins, 2011

Bowles got his first head coaching experience at the interim level. He was an assistant coach for the Dolphins in 2011, but took over as interim head coach after Miami fired Tony Sparano in Week 14 of that season. Bowles went 2-1 in the final three games of the season and the Dolphins missed out on a playoff spot.

Year Record Result
2011 2-1 Missed playoffs

New York Jets, 2015-2018

After his brief interim stay with Miami, Bowles moved to the Eagles and then to the Cardinals. After two seasons in Arizona as defensive coordinator, Bowles got the job as head coach of the Jets. His first year was a strong one, as New York went 10-6 with Ryan Fitzpatrick at the helm, narrowly missing out on a playoff spot.

After that it went downhill. The following year was the season with Josh McCown and Bryce Petty at quarterback, posting a record of 5-11. In 2018, the Jets selected Sam Darnold with the No. 3 overall pick, but he struggled in his first two seasons, posting records of 5-111 and 4-12.

The Jets fired Bowles after the 2018 season. The offense was never the team's strength, but the defense was outstanding when Bowles first took over. Each year the performance slowly declined, and with the offensive side of the ball still struggling, it made for a predictable decision as Bowles' time came to an end.

Year Record Result
2015 10-6 Missed playoffs
2016 5-11 Missed playoffs
2017 5-11 Missed playoffs
2018 4-12 Missed playoffs

Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 2022 – current

Bowles didn't have to wait long for a job. He was hired by the Buccaneers in 2019 to be the team's defensive coordinator and reunited with Bruce Arians after spending time together in Arizona.

When Arians decided to move into a consulting role after the 2021 season, Bowles was promoted to head coach, giving him his second shot at head coaching. He had Tom Brady for a year before the legend (officially) retired and lost in the wild card round of the playoffs.

In 2023, the Baker-Mayfield era began as the Buccaneers won the division for the second straight year and advanced to the divisional round in the postseason.
