September in Iowa was hot and dry, and it's expected to stay that way into October. The National Weather Service in Des Moines said on social media that the weather outlook for this month was warmer than normal.

How hot was it in September?

In Des Moines, the highest temperature recorded in September was 91 degrees on September 19th and 20th. The lowest temperature was 49 degrees on the 7th.

The average temperature in September is usually around 70 degrees.

September was the seventh warmest on record and the sixth driest in Des Moines, according to the NWS. Several dry days in a row resulted in drought conditions across northwest and northeast Iowa, said Chad Hahn, a meteorologist in the Des Moines office. Although not the entire state is in drought, Hahn noted that most of Iowa is considered “unusually dry.”

What is the forecast for October?

It doesn't look like there will be any cooling off in October, Hahn said, with temperatures expected to reach up to 90 degrees in the first week of the month.

“The average temperature for the month is about 70 degrees,” Hahn said. “Anything above that is considered above average.”

Drought across the state is expected to continue and worsen throughout October, with rainfall expected to be below average, NWS noted on social media.
