Hot weather expected in San Diego – NBC 7 San Diego

A fall heat wave hit San Diego this week, sending temperatures soaring to record triple digits in some communities, according to forecasters.

The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning for inland desert and valley communities, including El Cajon Poway Santee, La Mesa, San Marcos and Escondido, from 10 a.m. Tuesday through 8 p.m. Thursday. On Wednesday, this weather warning was extended until Monday. A heat warning also applies to the mountains.

NBC 7's Kelvin Henry was in Ramona, where residents say they are doing everything they can to stay safe in this heat.

In some areas, temperatures could be in the upper 90s to lower 100s during this time, especially near the foothills.

“It's hot away from the coast, but you can get relief from the heat by going to the coast,” said NBC 7 meteorologist Brooke Martell.

Temperature records were broken in some areas on both Tuesday and Wednesday, with the latter expected to be the hottest day of the week, according to Martell. On Wednesday, Ramona, Alpine, Palomar Mountain and Campo experienced record-breaking heat for this special day of the year.

A coastal vortex will develop over the weekend, causing temperatures to cool slightly.

Hot temperatures and low humidity could lead to dangerous fire conditions this week. However, San Diego is not expected to be affected by Santa Ana winds, which can often worsen fire weather. Humidity is expected to be 10 to 15% over the weekend, with conditions slightly better on Thursday and Friday.

San Diego can expect a warm weekend – albeit a little cooler than the week. Temperatures will remain 5-10 degrees above average near the coast and 15 to 20 degrees above average in inland valleys.

Some relief could come as early as next week, although we are unlikely to experience autumnal weather yet.
