McDonald's is swapping protein in its "highly anticipated" sandwich release next week

Watch out, Chick-fil-A and Burger King – McDonald's is doing its best. Or at least in the hope that customers will put the chicken in their mouths.

On Thursday, the fast food giant announced that its “highly anticipated” Chicken Big Mac will be available in U.S. restaurants on October 10.

The “reinterpretation of a classic menu item was secretly introduced by Chain at the McDonnell's pop-up,” McDonald's said in a press release.

“By tapping into some of our fans' greatest passions, from dupe culture to live streaming, we are able to serve more than just a sandwich,” said Tariq Hassan, chief marketing and customer experience officer at McDonald's USA, in a statement. “This campaign truly has something for everyone to enjoy and we are offering experiences that will surprise and delight them, all before the Chicken Big Mac hits restaurants.”

The original Big Mac has been on the menu since 1968. The chicken version consists of two chicken patties, Big Mac sauce, lettuce, cheese and pickles on a sesame seed bun. One Chicken Big Mac has 530 calories, according to nutrition information on the McDonald's website.

“Big Mac superfan,” as McDonald's calls him, and “internet star” Kai Cenat will host a livestream and share people's unfiltered reactions to the Chicken Big Mac trial. Livestream details can be found on McDonald's social media channels.

In July, McDonald's reported a Decline in sales for the first time in years as it struggled to attract cash-strapped customers due to higher menu prices.

Global sales fell 1% in the second quarter, the first decline in 13 quarters, compared with analysts' average estimate of a 0.53% increase, according to LSEG data.
