The Minnesota Twins are making sweeping changes after a season-ending collapse that cost the team a spot in the postseason.

General manager Thad Levine was fired Friday, a day after several coaches were fired. Levine has spent the last eight seasons with the team and was instrumental in helping the club win three AL Central titles and four postseason berths.

“Thad’s impact on the Minnesota Twins cannot be overstated,” said Derek Falvey, Twins president of baseball operations. “He was a true partner and leader who always strived to advance the organization and care for the people around him.”

“Thad has helped create a strong team culture focused on excellence and collaboration that will endure well into the future. While we will miss his leadership, we are equally excited about the next chapter of his journey and wish him nothing but success in his future endeavors. I would like to personally thank him for everything he has done to help us get better every day.”

Minnesota was in postseason position for most of the season, but was overtaken late by the surging Detroit Tigers after they went 6-18, finished 82-80 and missed the playoffs.

The Twins reached the playoffs in 2017, 2019, 2020 and 2023, as they broke a 19-year playoff win drought and advanced to the ALDS. The club has not been to the World Series since winning it in 1991.

The team also announced that hitting coaches Rudy Hernandez and David Popkins, assistant hitting coach Derek Shomon and assistant bench/infield coach Tony Diaz would not return to the major league coaching staff in 2025.

Manager Rocco Baldelli will return next year despite the late-season freefall, Falvey confirmed on September 29.

“I am grateful to the Pohlad family, Derek Falvey and Dave St. Peter, for providing me with such a comprehensive leadership opportunity over the last eight years of my career,” Levine said in a statement.

“Now is the right time for me to take on my next rewarding professional challenge. I will forever cherish the friendships I have made in the Minnesota Twins organization and throughout Twins territory.”

Minnesota opens its 2025 season on March 27 at the Cardinals before returning to Target Field to open at home against the Astros on April 3.
