Unfortunately, this is where the 2024 Brewers lie. Hoisted by her own petard.

As for the aforementioned question of speed, the Brewers had that firmly on their side throughout the regular season. For example, consider how their hitters and pitchers performed in high-leverage situations:

This wouldn't have been a Jack if the Brewers hadn't been able to transfer their clutch gene to the Wild Card Series. But between the start of Game 2 and the near end of Game 3, things didn't just happen. It was The History of the series.

Will Jake Bauers and Sal Frelick go back-to-back for the lead in Game 3? Coupling.

Brewers pitchers not allowing a single run for 15 straight innings? Coupling.

But then it was…well, it was all just gone, wasn't it? And the really painful part for the Brewers is that they don't even deserve to have the award taken away from them.

When you get to a point where you can give your two-time All-Star closer a multi-run lead in the ninth inning of an elimination game, you've done something right. And Williams was even more confident than usual, going 14 straight without allowing a run.

And the pitch he threw to Alonso? It wasn't even that bad.

Ultimately, the Brewers lost a game they should have won. It had to happen, but they certainly hoped it could wait until 2025.
