Northern lights visible in far northern Colorado

This weekend the Northern Lights may put on a spectacle for the northern areas of the country. The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) has issued a geomagnetic storm warning for the Northern Hemisphere for October 3-5.

The SWPC discovered a so-called coronal mass ejection (CME) on October 3rd. This is an eruption of solar material that can increase geomagnetic activity around the poles.

The areas with the best visibility are the northern US states and Canada, with the peak on Friday and visibility continuing through Sunday. The Rocky Mountain Region offers the best views from central Wyoming to southern Canada.

In Colorado, the views won't be as great as they were during the last major solar outbreak in May of this year. The only areas that might have a chance of a faint look would be areas of northern Colorado, just a few miles south of the Wyoming state line.

There may be minor radio interference on weekends. However, no major disruptions are expected.
