The Michigan State Spartans (3-3) were outscored on Friday night on the road with a 31-10 loss to the No. 6 Oregon Ducks. One of the Spartans who championed the cause was redshirt junior cornerback Charles Brantley, who spoke immediately after the ballgame.

“I believe in this team,” Brantley said. “I feel like we’re continuing to work, improving every week and getting better.”

Confident words from the Sarasota, Florida native, who had nine tackles and a clutch interception in the end zone to prevent the Ducks from making a second attempt at the goal line. Brantley now has two interceptions, the most he has had in a season during his four years in East Lansing.

The interception was one of two red zone picks thrown by Ducks quarterback Dillon Gabriel. Junior defensive lineman Malik Spencer helped the defense with an end zone pick of his own on the Ducks' second drive of the game. The offense simply had difficulty taking advantage of the ball losses.

“We're getting the momentum, you know, we just have to keep it going on the other side of the ball,” Brantley said. “We also lose the ball, we have to score – just team ball.”

The Ducks rushed for 213 yards, 166 of which came from junior running back Jordan James. The Spartans struggled to stop the Ducks on the ground, allowing a seven-play, 55-yard touchdown drive that consisted entirely of running plays. James scored his only touchdown on this drive.

In the passing game, the Spartans' defense thrived in the first half but faltered in the second half. The Ducks accumulated 264 yards of passing offense and many of those plays were broken tackles that led to players making multiple plays into Spartan territory.

Brantley talked about the defense as a whole and their attempt to stop a team averaging 458 yards per game.

“They got more YAC (yards after catch) than anything else,” Brantley said. “I mean missed tackles hurt any defense, we just have to come together and make sure we finish and make tackles.”

The Spartans will rest this week as they head into a bye and regroup before facing another run-dominant opponent in Week 7 against the Iowa Hawkeyes. As Brantley said, this team will improve every week, and bringing in such elite talent will pay off in the long run.
