Popular Halloween retailer and infamous shop owner Spirit Halloween hit back on “Saturday Night Live” on Tuesday after the sketch comedy show shared a parody of the retailer online.

“SNL” opened its 50th season this weekend, drawing 5.3 million live viewers in the premiere in the show's best opener since 2020, AP reported. Among the skits that reintroduced Maya Rudolph as Kamala Harris and poked fun at the popularity of viral hippo Moo Deng was one that teased Spirit Halloween for its tendency to appear in place of recently closed businesses.

NBC shared the clip on the show's official Xformerly Twitter, account on Sunday, giving the retailer a perfect opportunity to hit back.

“Communities are struggling. Closed shops. Closed shops. Empty parking spaces. When hard times come, it's easy to feel like no one cares. But help is on the way. Because when others leave, we show up,” says a voiceover at the beginning of the sketch. “We don’t see a dead-end town, we don’t see an abandoned Kmart, we see a ghost. A ghost Halloween.”

“We provide vulnerable communities with the things they need most – rash-breaking wigs, disposable fog machines, and famous character costumes just tailored to avoid a lawsuit,” the parody jokes, which continues Liquor stores invest not only in vacant buildings, but also in people, creating “six-week jobs for some of America's hardest-hit perverts.”

“We’re great at bringing things back from the dead.”

The skit drew laughter, but Spirit Halloween apparently wasn't willing to accept the taunts.

“We're great at bringing things back from the dead @nbcsnl,” Spirit posted on X in response to “SNL.” Attached to the post is a manipulated image of a Spirit Halloween costume pack titled “Irrelevant 50th Anniversary TV Show,” which features the “SNL 50 The Anniversary Season” logo.

Below the title is a list of “costume” components, including “outdated references,” “unknown performers,” and “shrinking ratings.” Oh, and one size fits most adults.

“I'm not going to lie: This was funnier than many of the sketches I've seen on 'SNL' recently. And I say that as a long-time fan of the show who still enjoys it for the most part,” reads a comment below Contribution. “This is way funnier than her video,” another agreed, while one claimed: “This clapback might just be my favorite video of 2024.”

However, some internet users took to the comments to defend “SNL,” arguing that the skit about the Halloween retailer was not only funny, but also pretty accurate.

“The skit was hilarious though…I almost choked up when they were talking about the cleared Auto Zone,” one comment said. “SNL didn't even lie with that sketch,” another agreed, while one simply explained. “SNL Rules. Always, always like that.”

And while some commenters complained that Spirit “woke up and chose violence” with the post, the brand itself seemed to suggest that it was just having fun.

“Creepy laughter is the best kind,” Spirit responded to a comment praising the joke. “Glad to hear it brought some Halloween joy! Let’s keep the fun going all season!”
