Lakers News: What did Bronny James look like in his professional debut?

The Los Angeles Lakers opened their preseason schedule for the 2024-25 NBA season against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday evening. Los Angeles lost the game by a score of 124-107.

Lakers stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis did not play in the game, so the other players had to step up. Los Angeles trailed for most of the game, making it a tough contest overall.

Rookie guard Bronny James made his debut for the Lakers and all eyes were on his performance. While there was a lot of hype surrounding Bronny, the security guard was a little underwhelmed.

He scored just two points on 1 of 6 shooting from the field and shot 0 of 1 from beyond the 3-point line. In 16 minutes of play, Bronny also recorded one rebound and one assist.

It was a tough game for the young guard, but most people shouldn't be too shocked by it. Bronny struggled during Summer League but showed some strong defensive instincts on the court.

That was evident again in this preseason game when he registered three blocks on the ground. He was able to disrupt opponents on defense, a skill the Lakers valued when they signed him.

Lakers head coach JJ Redick commented on Bronny's performance based on this content. He paid particular attention to the young player's defensive performance.

“He can do some things defensively at his size that are really unique, and I think he can develop into a really disruptive defender,” Redick said. “That has been shown. He’s still figuring out who he is on offense. That’s our job as a player development program, just to build him up.”

“But honestly, it’s so easy to train him. He has a great soul and just great energy. I like being around him. I keep my fingers crossed for him. He is a good player that we would like to have in our program.”

Bronny will likely spend the majority of the season in the G-League, giving him time to improve his overall game. However, the Lakers believe he can become an influential member of the team over time.

Patience will be key in Los Angeles as Bronny develops into a more well-rounded NBA player. If they can give him the time he needs, the franchise could benefit in the long run.
