With a 42:28 win Maryland on Saturday, Indiana improved to 5-0 for the first time since 1967. On Wednesday, ESPN reported College game day Co-host Rece Davis assessed the Hoosiers' chances of sneaking into the College Football Playoff.

“I don’t think they’re a real playoff contender, but I think they’re good enough to have a say in knocking someone out.” Davis said. “There aren’t a lot of options for Indiana, but they are there Michigan game you mentioned. They are at Ohio State.

“Obviously I don't think they will win this game, but I saw that they will win the game Michigan State The team that traveled to Columbus in 2015, quite frankly, with a backup quarterback had nothing to do with winning that game, nothing to do with winning the game at all. And not only did they win the game, they went to the College Football Playoff and won the Big Ten Championship.”

Indiana will have plenty of time to prepare for Michigan and Ohio State. The Hoosiers host Michigan on Nov. 9 and enjoy a bye week before visiting Ohio State. Still, history is not on Indiana’s side.

Indiana has lost its last three meetings against the Wolverines and its last 28 meetings against the Buckeyes. Additionally, the Hoosiers have not defeated both programs in a season since 1987.

Of course, Indiana is already having a historic season. Prior to this season, the Hoosiers had not started a season 5-0 in 57 years. On Saturday, Indiana looked solid in its win over Maryland, totaling 510 yards on offense.

Unfortunately, there was undoubtedly room for improvement. Indiana committed four turnovers, including two interceptions, in the win. If the Hoosiers can correct their mistakes by November, they have a chance to make their first appearance in the CFP.

Still, they'll have to show Davis a lot more before he's fully convinced.

“I think Colorado, Indiana — different conferences, obviously — but Indiana is kind of in the same boat in that I think they have more of a say in who wins by maybe pulling off an upset than they do by winning it themselves himself,” Davis said.
