TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Nick Saban wore Georgia football's number during his 17 years of building Alabama into the premier program in college football. He went 8-2 against the Bulldogs and won eight of the last nine games.

Here comes new Crimson Tide coach Kalen DeBoer in his first matchup against a program that has won two national titles since Alabama last won.

Tonight, No. 1 Georgia plays No. 4 Alabama at today's Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

“We have to do our part to make the environment special and bring our fans to it,” DeBoer said.

Georgia coach Kirby Smart is 97-16 in his ninth season as head coach. DeBoer is 107-12 in his 10th seasonTh including a trip to the national championship game last season with Washington.

“His record speaks for itself,” Smart said. “Everywhere he went he was successful. He is very confident in his work and his organizational methods. …In the situation he's in, you have to be pretty confident in your skin to go in and do things your way, especially given the record they have. It seems like he did it without any problems.”

Smart first had DeBoer on his radar in Washington a few years ago because he was facing Oregon and former Georgia defensive coordinator Dan Lanning. Washington won all three games of the last two seasons against Oregon by three points each.

Smart spoke to Lanning about facing DeBoer in the offseason.

“He didn’t have the greatest success either,” Smart said. “He had some difficult games and some difficult decisions against him.”

Georgia players are motivated by last year's loss in the SEC championship game, but some were part of the team that beat Alabama for the national title in 2021. Linebacker Smael Mondon was asked if beating Alabama was like climbing Mount Everest.

“I wouldn’t even say it’s like getting over a mountain because we’ve done it before,” he said.

Compensating penalties against Georgia and Alabama allowed the Bulldogs to reach fourth and fifth place a second time. The second attempt at a first down almost failed, but a pass interference call on Alabama triggered the automatic equalizer two plays later when Carson Beck delivered to Dominic Lovett and then to Arian Smith. Luckie Lawson intercepted Beck's pass and successfully added two more.

Alabama takes a 30-7 lead after Carson Beck fails to pass a ball under pressure in the end zone. The intentional grounding call means it is a safety. There are 1:39 minutes left in the first half.

Trevor Etienne converted a fourth-and-1 run to keep a Georgia drive alive in its own territory, then scored on a 7-yard touchdown run. Georgia went for a two-point conversion, but after an offensive pass interference penalty, the Bulldogs settled for a PAT. It's 28-7 Alabama with 6:43 left in the first quarter.

Jalen Milroe looks Heisman Trophy worthy. Milroe is 9 of 9 for 128 yards and just raced down the sideline for a 36-yard touchdown. Alabama leads 28-0 with 12:24 left in the second quarter.

Carson Beck's third interception off a short pass gave Alabama excellent field position. Alabama capitalized with a 7-yard touchdown run from wide receiver Germie Bernard. Alabama leads 21-0 with 2:21 left in the first quarter.

Alabama has its way with Georgia's defense. The Crimson Tide marched 84 yards in six plays and took a 14-0 lead on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Jalen Milroe to running back Jam Miller. The Crimson Tide are averaging 12.1 yards per play.

That was an impressive opening drive. Alabama gained 70 yards in 8 plays and scored on a 7-yard touchdown run by Jaklen Milroe. This is the first touchdown the Bulldogs have given up this season. Milroe was 3 of 3 for 44 yards on that drive.

Georgia defensive lineman Mykel Williams had some spring in his step after stretching and running into the end zone with the Bulldogs during pregame warmups. He was alongside Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins and Warren Brinson, who is also returning from injury.

Williams' return from a grade 2 ankle sprain will give the defense a boost, even if he doesn't get the usual number of shots.

Jordan Hall made the trip but isn't dressed to the nines.

The scene here at midfield: SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey is talking to people and ESPN player Kirk Hebrstreit is hanging out there with his golden retriever Ben.

Georgia will have key players serving as game captains tonight: quarterback Carson Beck, safety Malaki Starks, linebacker Jalon Walker and running back Trevor Etienne.

Georgia defensive lineman Jordan Hall (legs) is now listed as out on the final SEC availability report, but defensive end Mykel Williams is listed as a game-time decision. Williams missed the last two games with a grade two ankle sprain. Defensive lineman Warren Brinson is no longer listed at all, suggesting he is ready to go.

Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer took the field about half an hour ago and the Crimson Tide players have been warming up on the field for some time. Georgia arrived just over two hours before kickoff at 7:49 ET. Kirby Smart recorded a television interview and is now running around the field with his youngest son.

Representatives from 16 NFL teams, including Bears general manager Ryan Poles and Lions general manager Brad Holmes, are expected to attend tonight, a post said

There are reports today that wide receiver London Humphreys could leave today because he is not listed on the SEC availability report today. Humphreys was listed on the SEC availability report as being out for the past three days and the only gameday update came 90 minutes before kickoff. I looked and was told, “Nothing has changed.” We reported on Wednesday morning that Humphreys was out for this game with mononucleosis.

Your referee for today's game is Daniel Gautreaux. He worked Georgia's win at Tennessee last season and was a field judge for Georgia-Alabama in the 2021 SEC Championship Game.

Fans and media entering the 100,077-capacity stadium will have to undergo U.S. Secret Service security checks as former President Trump is attending the game. Turns out a small umbrella in a work bag is a no-go.

Georgia vs Alabama predictions

Alabama 24, Georgia 23

Georgia didn't score a touchdown at Kentucky until the fourth quarter in its narrow win two weeks ago. It will take more red zone touchdowns than Peyton Woodring field goals. He is 6 of 6 this season. Georgia has held its opponents to three field goals and no touchdowns in four red zone trips. Alabama's explosive offense will be a much different test.
