Bruins announce new contract for star goaltender Jeremy Swayman

Negotiations between Jeremy Swayman and the Bruins are over.

Boston announced a new contract for Swayman on Sunday morning, giving him an eight-year deal with an average annual value of $8.25 million. The pact gave Swayman a tie for fifth-highest paid goaltender in the NHL in terms of AAV, behind only Carey Price, Sergei Bobrovsky, Andre Vasilevskiy and Connor Hellebuyck.

It was a well-deserved payday for Swayman, who ranked fifth in the league in save percentage last season and finished seventh in Vezina Trophy voting. But the 25-year-old saved his best game for the postseason, where he was arguably Boston's best player in a first-round triumph over the Toronto Blue Jays and helped the B's play six games against the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers .

Swayman's contract was announced less than 24 hours after Boston completed its preseason. Head coach Jim Montgomery previously announced that newcomer Joonas Korpisalo would start in net for the Bruins' regular-season opener on Tuesday night, and that plan will likely remain in place even after Swayman's contract situation is resolved. The fifth-year pro hasn't played in a game since mid-May.

However, Korpisalo's status as Boston's No. 1 goaltender will only be temporary. The Bruins are banking on Swayman between the posts, and they made that clear with an expensive deal for the 2017 fourth-round pick.
