Authorities are investigating a shooting that occurred Sunday morning in a residential area of Bath, prompting police to briefly issue a protective order for surrounding residents.

The shooting happened just before 7 a.m. Sunday, Maine State Police spokeswoman Shannon Moss said in a brief news release.

Moss said there is no danger to the public and state and local police are investigating. She did not say whether anyone was injured or taken into custody in connection with the shooting.

Police at the scene near Oak Grove Avenue and Crawford Drive early Sunday afternoon also declined to comment on possible injuries or arrests in connection with the incident.

Authorities said state police will release more information about the shooting later Sunday.

Bath Police Chief Andrew Booth told the assembled media at midday on Sunday that the shelter-in-place order had been issued “due to the uncertainty surrounding the scene and what was occurring.” But after we established that everything was safe, we lifted the lockdown and there is no danger to the public.”

The order was issued around 8:30 a.m. for the northern part of the city while officers responded to what was described at the time as a “situation” on Crawford Drive. The curfew was lifted around 9 a.m.

Booth said officers have been in contact with residents in the area.

“Bath is a very close-knit community. “Things like this don’t happen often,” the chief said. “Everyone knows everyone here, and we will get through this as a community.”

Dylan Harris, who lives nearby, expressed concern for his neighbors on Sunday.

“All the kids in my neighborhood, I’m scared for them,” he said.

But Harris said he felt reassured by the police's quick response.

“The whole city of Bath is a concern,” he said.
