“The Texans let the struggling AFC East team out of steam before the Patriots game.” Phoenix Suns defeat LeBron and Los Angeles Lakers in preseason opener

On Saturday, September 28thTh2024 Green Day ended the North American leg of their Saviors tour at Petco Park in San Diego. The entire tour began this May in Santiago de Compostela, Spain and ends on May 30thTh 2025 in Mumbai. This tour was created in support of Saviors, Green Day's fourteenth album.

After 35 years of touring, the band has learned a thing or two about captivating an audience. Green Day's performance included many coordinated flash bang events with fireworks to accompany their songs, as well as a full stage selection of lighting effects. This tour was a four-act program in North America consisting of The Linda Lindas, Rancid, Smashing Pumpkins and Green Day. Given the cheap ticket prices, this is a pretty big show.

There's a lot of talk these days about the ebb and flow of demand for tickets to big shows. Consumers are increasingly reluctant to spend money and the number of unsold tickets has risen significantly because fans are under economic pressure. But when Green Day comes to town, it's still a party not to be missed.

Ticket prices remained fair, even until the last minute in San Diego, where a number of limited-view tickets were added just before the show, selling for $36 each. For those familiar with ballparks, the obstruction noted was that there was a net to prevent foul balls from entering the crowd. That net was still there because the Padres remain in contention as baseball heads into the playoffs. Here's a pro tip: Once it's dark during a nighttime show, you won't be able to see the network. The video screens on stage glow brightly in the darkness and the sound is unaffected.

The Saviors tour was focused on the 30thTh anniversary of Dookie album and the 20thTh anniversary of American idiot. By now the audience knew this music very well and sang along throughout the entire show. There's something special about being in a crowd of longtime fans coming together to celebrate the music that is the soundtrack of their lives.

Once a band has been touring a show for a while, they find a rhythm. If you see the show twice you'll have twice as much fun, but both shows will be very similar. So sometimes it's the unexpected that triggers a little burst of energy when it comes out of nowhere.

As the show began in San Diego, lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong noticed two people fighting in the front of the audience. He stopped the show and directly asked the attackers to stop fighting. He had to say it a few times until the situation calmed down. Then Billie Joe showed how a great frontman handles a crowd and turned the entire stadium into a support group. He urged everyone to join in the calming process by repeatedly chanting “Ohm” as a calming device. The concert became group therapy and with the support of the audience the situation resolved itself.

Even more unexpected was the pep talk Billie Joe gave the audience as the show was almost over. Today, it is no surprise to anyone that there is tension in society given the impending highly partisan election. Billie Joe avoided the tripwires and spoke from the heart. He said:

“We are not choosing sides. We all agree. That is unity. We want a new America. Something that includes us all with compassion, love and joy.”

What Billie Joe said and how he said it should be the norm for dealing with people. But in this polarized world, people talk in circles. The truth was left to the actors. Green Day isn't afraid to speak from the heart and remind those in attendance how normal people should treat each other.

It all boils down to trust. Those in the entertainment industry who survive the journey learn to build an affinity with their fans. In return, fans buy tickets and merchandise and build a community among each other that celebrates the joy of singing together the songs they have been playing most of their lives. Those who came and saw this tour were treated to 38 songs in almost two and a half hours. The show started with a new song: The American dream is killing me and ended with a heartwarming classic: Good riddance (time of your life.) The arc through her back catalog during the show captivated the audience. When the audience is in tune with the musicians, they develop a bond as the fans in the stadium slowly become a collective community. Then they celebrate the past together with the performers and inspire the musicians to carry on in the present.

Green Day is not over yet. They have already booked many shows around the world for 2025. The party in San Diego at the end of the Saviors North American tour was a joyous one. The crowd was a mix of young and old, left and right, wealthy and sullen. In the end, they were happy about the event and left satisfied. It's not easy managing a stadium crowd. Significant logistical tasks must be completed before and during the performance. Green Day gave the audience a great experience. It is clear that the stadium will fill up again at the next round.
