Tom's Ten Takes – Steelers Vs Cowboys Dak Prescott: Persistence and resilience got us a win on Sunday night

We're a month into the NFL season and the good teams are starting to separate themselves from the bad.

At this early stage of the season, there are typically a handful of undefeated teams chasing the dream of perfection. The 2024 NFL season was unorthodox in this regard, as only two teams had a zero in the loss column.

One team is exactly where expected, while the other delivers a pleasant surprise with an unforeseen comeback story.

Who are the NFL's two remaining undefeated teams this season? The Sporting News breaks it down below.

There are still undefeated teams left in the NFL

The Chiefs and Vikings are the only two 4-0 teams remaining in the NFL over the last four weeks.

Kansas City has four quality wins, defeating the Ravens and Bengals at home and the Falcons and Chargers on the road.

Minnesota's wins are impressive in their own right: wins against the Giants in New York and then against Super Bowl contenders in the 49ers, the Texans at home and the Packers on the road.

Who are the Chiefs playing this week?

The Chiefs will host the Saints in Week 5 at Arrowhead Stadium on “Monday Night Football.”

Kansas City is dealing with serious injuries on offense, with running back Isiah Pacheco out with a broken fibula and breakout wide receiver Rashee Rice out with a torn ACL. It has prevailed to this point, getting off to a perfect start to make the first three-pointer in NFL history.

Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Co. will be tested against a New Orleans team that has been up and down so far. They started the season 2-0 and won convincingly against the Panthers and Cowboys, but suffered two defeats in a row against the Eagles and Falcons.

The Chiefs are 5.5-point favorites in the matchup, according to BetMGM Sportsbook.

If they can get a win, they will remain undefeated until the bye in Week 6.

Who are the Vikings playing this week?

The Vikings will face a very different challenge in maintaining their undefeated record.

Minnesota will travel to London to face the Jets as part of the NFL's London Games at a neutral site at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Vikings' strong start was fueled by one of the league's best defenses and a resurgence from 2018 No. 3 overall pick Sam Darnold. Darnold secured the starting quarterback job when 2024 first-round pick JJ McCarthy suffered a season-ending torn meniscus.

Darnold hasn't looked back since, leading the NFL with 11 touchdown passes in four weeks.

He will face Aaron Rodgers and the Jets, who enter the competition with a record of 2-2. New York opened the season with a loss to the 49ers but rebounded with consecutive wins over the Titans and Patriots. It suffered a disappointing defeat against the Broncos in poor weather conditions.

The Vikings are 2.5-point favorites in the matchup, according to BetMGM Sportsbook.

Just like the Chiefs, if Minnesota manages to get a win, they will remain undefeated until their Week 6 bye.

History of undefeated seasons in the NFL

Undefeated in the regular season and won the Super Bowl

The 1972 Dolphins are the only team in NFL history to have an undefeated season. They went 14-0 in the regular season and went 3-0 in the playoffs and won the Super Bowl.

Undefeated in the regular season but lost in the playoffs

  • 2007 New England Patriots
  • 1942 Chicago Bears
  • 1934 Chicago Bears

The 1934 and 1942 Bears and the 2007 Patriots all went undefeated in their respective regular seasons, but all lost in the Super Bowl.

The 1934 Bears went 13-0 in the regular season and lost the Super Bowl to the New York Giants. There were no playoffs back then and the top two teams went to the Big Game.

The 1942 Bears suffered a similar fate, going 11-0 in the regular season and then losing the Super Bowl to the Washington Redskins.

The 2007 Patriots are the most recent example of a near-perfect season. They went 16-0 in 2007 and won two playoff games before losing to the New York Giants in the Super Bowl.
