Patriots captain Jabrill Peppers arrested on assault, battery and strangulation charges

Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers was arrested Saturday morning in Braintree and is charged with assault, assault with a dangerous weapon, strangulation and possession of a Class “B” substance.

In a statement Monday, Braintree police said they responded to a call early Saturday morning reporting an altercation between two people at a residential address. After an investigation, Peppers was arrested and police said, “The victim was treated at the scene by emergency medical services.” Authorities said the cocaine was suspected to be in question.

On Monday, a Patriots spokesperson released the following statement: “We are aware of an incident involving Jabrill Peppers over the weekend that police are currently investigating. We will have no further comment at this time.”

Peppers, 29, did not play in Sunday's game against Miami. He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Quincy District Court.

In an interview Monday morning on WEEI, Patriots coach Jerod Mayo said Peppers called him Saturday morning to tell him what happened. Mayo said the team notified the NFL of the incident. Asked if, to his knowledge, Peppers is still with the team, Mayo said: “I don’t think anyone knows the facts or anything like that. I mean, it’s a process.”

Peppers was elected team captain for the first time this season, his third time with New England. Peppers originally joined the Patriots as a free agent in 2022 and had a career year last season.

The Patriots signed him to a three-year, $24 million contract extension in July. Mayo commented on the extension shortly after it was released, saying: “(Peppers) really embodies everything we want on the field.” He is very selfless. He's out there flying around all the time. And it’s good to have this deal done.”
