A burst water pipe caused a huge sinkhole on Interstate 495 in Haverhill on Monday, shutting down traffic for commuters, officials said.

At about 10:15 a.m., state police posted photos of the sinkhole on social media and warned there would be delays.

“This incident will have a significant impact on traffic on Rt 495 through the Methuen-Haverhill corridor and interchanges at Routes 213, 110, 97 and 125,” state police wrote.

It was not immediately clear what caused the water pipe to burst.

In a follow-up statement Monday afternoon, state police said the sinkhole required the closure of the two right lanes on the southbound side, which “resulted in significant traffic backup on both Route 495 and secondary roads” in the area.

“MassDOT has advised that repairs to the water main will not be completed until later this evening as road closures will remain in place until tomorrow afternoon,” State Police said. “The extended duration of road repairs is due to extensive damage to pavements and road surfaces. Travelers should expect significant traffic congestion from rush hour commuters both today and tomorrow.”
