9 New TV Shows Premiering on Netflix, Hulu, and More (October 7-13)

If you're looking to curl up on the couch, be sure to check out all of the top new TV shows premiering this week on Netflix, Hulu, and other streaming services, as well as broadcast and cable TV channels.

This week's new TV lineup is led by two returning favorites, school comedy “Abbott Elementary,” Season 4, and teen adventure drama “Outer Banks,” Season 4. This week features several star-studded debuts, including the psychological thriller “Disclaimer.” Cate Blanchett, the boxing drama “La Máquina” with Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna and the NBA docuseries “Starting 5” with LeBron James. “Ali Wong: Single Lady” (Netflix)

In previous specials, Ali Wong has poked fun at getting married, having children and now, fittingly, divorce. Let's call it the cycle of modern life. The comedian's latest set, filmed at the Wiltern in Los Angeles during her sold-out Netflix Is a Joke Fest appearance last spring, delves into the ups and downs of a divorced mother's life, including dating. Wong even talks about how her now-boyfriend Bill Hader pursued her, although she jokes that she almost rejected him because she paid for a dating app: “I gotta get my money's worth!”

Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna have worked together several times since starring in 2001's “Y Tu Mamá También,” but have largely pursued separate careers in Hollywood. Now they're reunited in this boxing drama, Hulu's first Spanish-language original. Boxer Esteban “La Máquina” Osun (García Berna) is at rock bottom after a devastating loss, but his manager and best friend Andy Lujan (Luna) is determined to put him back on top with a high-profile fight. When they come into conflict with a nefarious organization, the battle has deadly consequences for the longtime friends.

“Abbott Elementary” Season 4 (ABC)

The will-they-or-won't-they romantic conflict between Janine (Quinta Brunson) and Gregory (Tyler James Williams) was finally resolved – they confessed their feelings for each other and kissed in the season three finale. What now? Her new status will certainly require some adjustment, both for her and her colleagues at Abbott. And as always, a new school year means new shenanigans, like pets in the classroom and (shudder) a case of ringworm. Education has many dangers.

Forget prestige TV. Forget even the middle of TV. Sometimes I just want to indulge in a guilty pleasure. And that's exactly what “Outer Banks” is – just a vehicle for watching stupid, pretty people go on funny, completely unrealistic adventures. The third season finale ended with an 18-month flashback in which the Pogues received a lucrative and tempting offer to find Blackbeard's treasure. Season 4 does a flashback to show viewers how they got to this moment. After finding the gold in El Dorado, the Pogues return to their “normal” lives. Together they run a bait, fishing tackle and charter tour store. But after some financial setbacks, they decide to take part in the treasure hunt – which of course comes with new enemies on their heels.

'Tis the season of thrills and goosebumps brought by various new horror projects such as “Teacup” from executive producer James Wan (“The Conjuring” universe). A disparate group of people trapped on a farm in rural Georgia must come together to survive in the face of a mysterious threat. The cast includes Yvonne Strahovski, Scott Speedman and Chaske Spencer. Wan describes the show as “a genre-bending mix of horror, mystery and drama, with layers that unfold like a captivating puzzle.” You may want to keep the lights on while you watch.

“Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft” (Netflix)

This animated series spin-off of the video game franchise picks up where the Survivor trilogy left off. What follows is Lara Croft's next chapter in her globetrotting adventures. More than 25 years after her first appearance, Lara (voiced by Hayley Atwell) continues to explore ancient mysteries and uncover lost truths in breathtaking – and dangerous – destinations. Netflix is on the rise with animated series based on major franchises (see: “Terminator Zero”), and this new “Tomb Raider” could be in good company.

A trio of Oscar winners team up for this limited psychological thriller series: Alfonso Cuarón as writer/director and Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline in the lead roles. The ensemble cast also includes Sacha Baron Cohen, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Lesley Manville. Based on Renée Knight's bestselling novel of the same name, the story follows acclaimed journalist Catherine Ravenscroft (Blanchett), who has earned a reputation by exposing the misdeeds of others. Then she receives a novel by an anonymous author that reveals her darkest secrets. As Catherine attempts to uncover the writer's identity, she must confront her past before it destroys her life and relationships.
