Robert Saleh said he was surprised to learn Tuesday that he was fired as the Jets' head coach, and a report said he considered making a big change to the coaching staff before getting his pink slip.

CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones reports that Saleh considered firing offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett after the team's loss to the Vikings in Week Five. Passing game coordinator Todd Downing likely would have been the choice to replace Hackett.

Firing Hackett likely would have caused resentment among quarterback Aaron Rodgers, as her previous relationship from Green Bay was seen as the reason Hackett got the Jets job in the first place. Jets owner Woody Johnson said Tuesday that he had not spoken to Rodgers about firing Saleh before he decided to part ways with the head coach, but Johnson might have taken Rodgers' feelings for Hackett into account if there were problems with the relationships would have been on the coaching staff.

Whatever the case, the result is that defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich is now interim head coach and the Rodgers/Hackett tandem remains at the helm of an offense that has scored the same number of points in five games as the Rodgers-less Jets last Season.
