Reese Witherspoon opens up about the third season of Big Little Lies.

Actress and fellow star Nicole Kidman were “waiting” for new material from Liane Moriarty, the New York Times bestselling author of “Big Little Lies,” Reese told E! News.

“We are waiting for Liane Moriarty. She's going to give something away very soon,” Witherspoon, 48, said Saturday on the red carpet at her media company Hello Sunshine's second annual Shine Away conference. “We’re going back to the original author and we’re going to go back to the original characters.”

She added: “It's exciting too because I think the kids are probably a bit older now. So that could add another element. I don’t know yet, I haven’t read it yet.”

Both stars have already confirmed that a third season of the Emmy-winning HBO drama series is in the works.

“Big Little Lies” Season 3: What we know

In November, Kidman, 57, mentioned during a question-and-answer session that a third season was underway, later telling Variety that she and Witherspoon “text about it every day.” “There is a schedule and we are doing it,” she added. Kidman and Witherspoon are both producers on the series.

During a Vanity Fair interview in June, Kidman confirmed that season three was moving forward “fast and furious,” but criticized her own willingness to talk about the new season.

“We have to keep our mouths shut,” Kidman continued. “There's this whole thing that you should never talk about something until you've done it. When you talk about doing it, it's the dopamine rush that comes with it. You feel like you did it.”

The first season, which premiered in 2017, revolved around a mysterious murder and the group of women involved in the investigation. Witherspoon, Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Zoë Kravitz and Laura Dern starred. Although the series was originally announced as a one-season story and even won the Emmy for Best Limited Series, the series returned in 2019 with a second season that deals with the aftermath of the murder. For season 2, Meryl Streep was added to the cast.

In previous interviews, Dern and Woodley said they hope there is a third season.

“We love each other so much and would have the time of our lives if we were back together, and we love our characters so much,” Dern told Entertainment Weekly in February.
