Phillies fans are in mourning after losing to the Mets in the NLDS Plaschke: Dodger up! Desperate Dodgers drop Padres and return to Dodger Stadium for Game 5

play

The New York Mets have been in win-or-go-home mode for much of the last three weeks. That burden now weighs heavily on the Philadelphia Phillies.

Heading into Game 4 of the National League Division Series at New York's Citi Field, the surging Mets find themselves in a rare, advantageous position: with a 2-1 lead and a chance to knock off their rival, the Eastern champion Phillies.

Left-handed pitcher Ranger Suárez will start for Philadelphia against New York southpaw Jose Quintana, although both pitchers will certainly be on a short leash with so much at stake.

That's doubly true for the Phillies, who are facing elimination: Ace Zack Wheeler will be available if things go south early, as his Game 5 starting assignment won't matter much if the Phillies can't win Game 4. And Game 3 starter Cristopher Sanchez will miss his scheduled bullpen session and will be available for a limited time on just two days of rest.

If the Mets win, they'll pack their bags for either San Diego or Los Angeles for the NL Championship Series. Should the Phillies win today and play Game 5 at home on Friday, they would host the Padres (who lead the rest of the NLDS at 2-1), but would travel to LA should the Dodgers win the next two games in the West.

Follow us for updates on Wednesday's Game 4:

After Bryce Harper walked and Nick Castellanos doubled to left, Alec Bohm drove in a run on a fielder's choice and an error attributed to Mets third baseman Mark Vientos.

Quintana got the next two outs to avoid further damage, with the Phillies taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth.

Ranger Suárez fought his way out of a bases-loaded jam for the second straight inning and got Brandon Nimmo to move to first base to end the threat.

Suárez led off with Starling Marte, then gave up a single to Tyrone Taylor and walked two with no one out. The southpaw struck out Francisco Lindor and Francisco Lindor, but Mark Vientos' infield single loaded the bases – and Suárez ended up winning the two-out battle with Nimmo.

The Mets loaded the bases with one out against Ranger Suárez – a double by Mark Vientos, a walk by Brandon Nimmo and an infield single by Pete Alonso – but the Phillies left-hander recovered to strike out Jose Iglesias and JD Martinez to escape unscathed.

Iglesias entered Wednesday's game against Suárez 6-8 in his career.

Mets starter Jose Quintana put the Phillies behind 1-2-3 in the first by striking out Kyle Schwarber to lead off and Bryce Harper to close out the period.

When is Game 4 between Mets and Phillies?

Wednesday's first pitch is scheduled for 5:08 p.m. ET at Citi Field.
