Detroit ― It may not have been the loudest crowd, although the volume certainly increased as the day went on.

But it was definitely the biggest crowd in this stadium at this time of year.

The Tigers announced Wednesday that 44,885 spectators showed up for Game 3 of the American League Division Series against the Cleveland Guardians, marking the largest paid attendance for a postseason game in Comerica Park history. The previous high was 43,973 for the 2013 ALDS game against the Oakland A's.

Comerica Park was once again the biggest crowd this season as the Tigers gave their fans a 3-0 win and a 2-1 series lead with a potential victory on Thursday. Game 4 is Thursday night at Comerica Park.

“You know, the atmosphere was incredible,” said Parker Meadows, who continues to be a spark plug for this team, leading off the game with a single and making it 1-0 in the first inning after Riley Greene's two-out hit.

“Probably almost the loudest game I’ve ever been a part of.

“I got goosebumps throughout the entire game.”

Tickets for Games 3 and 4 of the ALDS sold out in less than an hour last week as Detroit prepared to host its first Major League Baseball playoff games in a decade.

Fans were handed orange rally towels, which they waved early and often.

“It was nice to have a home playoff game. We were in the atmosphere, but they were opposing fans,” Carpenter said. “The fact that they were there for us today was special.”

“Before the game I definitely felt the moment. When I went up to bat, I was a little restricted. I didn’t necessarily hear the audience, but it was really special.”

There were several big cheers from the crowd in Game 3, but most came off well, including Spencer Torkelson's RBI double in the sixth inning, Matt Vierling's catch on a screaming liner in the seventh inning, and Will Vest's strikeout to end the eighth Inning. Then, of course, there was Tyler Holton's strikeout that ended the game and sparked a celebration as Detroit won a playoff game at Comerica Park for the first time since 2013.

Hours before the game, there was heavy traffic downtown, and there was a block party for three hours in front of the first pitch in front of the baseball stadium, where the “Let's Go Tigers!” performed. Chants were loud early on, and the sing-alongs to “Don't Stop Believin'” were loud late in the evening.

The crowd was standing room only, with several spectators in the farthest parts of the ballpark. Game 3 of the ALDS was the 25th postseason game in the history of Comerica Park, which opened in 2000 and did not host its first playoff game until 2006.

“Electrifying. You knew it was coming,” said Torkelson, whose Tigers ranked 24th in MLB average attendance this season but posted one of the game's best year-over-year overall increases, from 1.61 million to 1.86 million, leading to Thanks in large part to the late promotion that got them into the playoffs.

“You knew they were going to show up and be loud, and they didn’t disappoint.”

“We have so much fun playing in front of so many people screaming.”
