Heavy rain and flooded roads made the morning commute difficult for drivers across the Washington, D.C., region on Thursday

The showers and storms began overnight and brought heavy downpours.

Flood warnings and warnings were in effect for parts of the area. Water was high in flood-prone areas such as Annapolis and Old Town Alexandria.

Motorists on local roads were impacted by standing water and there were accidents and delays on highways. A collision on southbound I-295 closed lanes at Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue for about an hour. The remaining delays from the accident extended into the morning commute. Showers and storms are expected to continue into the afternoon.

Meanwhile, the remnants of Hurricane Helene are expected to bring wet weather to the D.C. area over the next few days. The area can expect some tropical rain on Friday. The storm is expected to settle over the area and bring gloomy weather with clouds, drizzle and showers to the region over the weekend.
