BioLab fire: Schools and government offices closed due to air quality concerns

ATLANTA – Several metro Atlanta districts are making changes to school activities and government operations in response to the chemical plant fire in Rockdale County over the weekend.

Officials in Gwinnett and Fulton County say they are investigating reports of haze and chemical odors that could be caused by changing winds around the chemical cloud in Conyers.

Here are the latest reported closures and cancellations in the Atlanta area.

School changes and closures

Georgia Piedmont Technical College is closing its Newton and Rockdale campuses until further notice.

Schools in Newton County are closed Monday. While Rockdale County Public Schools is on fall break, all employees who were scheduled to work Monday will work remotely.

In Fayette County, school officials say there will be no outside activity until Fayette County Emergency Services gives the all-clear. Afternoon activities have not been canceled at this time.

Gwinnett County Public Schools has canceled all outdoor activities and events and prevented outside air from entering school buildings.

“Until air quality improves, we encourage all families and staff to limit time outdoors and keep windows and doors closed,” a spokesperson for the Gwinnett County School system wrote in a statement.

Rockdale County government offices closed

Rockdale County has closed many of its government services while the county's shelter-in-place orders remain in effect.

• Rockdale County Animal Services

Businesses in the area were also strongly encouraged to close until they were deemed safe by authorities.
