The countdown to election day has begun, with just under six weeks to go.

It was an eventful election cycle, with President Joe Biden officially dropping out of the race on July 21 after debating former President Donald Trump on June 27 and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris.

Since then, both the Republican National Convention and the Democratic National Convention have taken place and the vice presidential candidates have been selected.

On September 10, Harris and Trump faced off in the first and only scheduled presidential debate before the November 5 election.

Now one question remains: Who will be the next President and Vice President of the United States, Harris and Tim Walz or Trump and JD Vance?

Although polls and polling averages vary and are constantly changing, they provide insight into the current state of the presidential campaign.

Poll averages in battleground states

Here's a look at three polling averages for the presidential race nationally and in seven key battleground states (as of 8:20 a.m. Thursday).

As the race for the White House continues, you can watch the first vice presidential debate between Vance and Walz on October 1 at 9 p.m. on CBS. The debate will also be streamed on all platforms where CBS News 24/7 and Paramount+ are available.

The debate will take place in New York City and will be moderated by “CBS Evening News” anchor and managing editor Norah O'Donnell and “Face the Nation” anchor and CBS News foreign correspondent Margaret Brennan.
