BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – High temperatures will continue to reach the low 90s in places into the first few days of October. Expect partly cloudy skies and warmer than normal temperatures. The only bright spot is that the humidity remains tolerable for now (dry heat). The early morning and evening hours will generally still feel quite pleasant.

A widespread low pressure system currently in the Caribbean Sea will move into the Gulf later this week. In response, tropical moisture will move toward the Gulf Coast region beginning Thursday. This stream of moisture will bring additional cloud cover and our next chance for rain. It won't be much of a chance as scattered to scattered showers are possible Thursday afternoon into Saturday. By Sunday, a weak cold front will move toward the coast, bringing drier and less humid air back to the region.

This front won't have much of a temperature bump. We will experience a gradual drop in temperatures early next week, resulting in temperatures a little closer to normal.

A block of tropical activity is forming in the eastern half of the Atlantic. Joyce is just clinging to its status as a tropical depression as it fizzles out over the central Atlantic. Tropical Storm Kirk is currently moving from the Eastern Atlantic towards the Central Atlantic. It is expected to be the next major hurricane of the season. A tropical wave directly behind Kirk has a high chance of developing into a tropical cyclone over the next seven days. Then the route west in the Caribbean is the feature we will pursue. The chances of development have actually decreased today. There remains great uncertainty as to whether this system can even develop into a tropical cyclone as it moves into the Gulf of Mexico. This is something we will continue to monitor and is not of immediate importance to the region.
