Oct 1 (Reuters) – More than 1.7 million homes and businesses were still without power in the southeastern and Midwestern U.S. on Monday after Helene hit the Florida Panhandle as a major hurricane on Sept. 26, according to PowerOutage.us had.

Those outages fell from about 2.0 million as of Monday afternoon as utilities continued to restore power. In total, the storm paralyzed service for around 5.5 million customers.

The winds, rain and storm surge killed more than 100 people in Helene, according to a Reuters tally of state and local officials.
The utility with the most outages was US energy company Duke Energy (DUK.N).opens new tab There are still about 395,000 customers in South Carolina and 266,000 in North Carolina in the Carolinas, according to PowerOutage.us.

Duke said Monday it had restored power to about 1.35 million customers in the Carolinas and expected to restore most remaining outages by Friday evening.
