A 34-year-old man was shot and killed by police when an officer responded to a report of domestic violence at a home in Northwood early Tuesday morning.

According to the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office, a Northwood officer responded to 534 First New Hampshire Turnpike at Route 4 at approximately 5:17 a.m. for an incident involving Malcolm Burns and his father.

When the Northwood police officer entered the home, a “physical altercation” occurred between Burns and the officer.

“During this altercation, the officer used deadly force and shot Mr. Burns,” authorities said. “Mr. Burns was struck by these shots and was pronounced dead at the scene.”

The officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries and there is no threat to the public, authorities said. The officer will only be identified after a formal interview.

An autopsy for Burns is scheduled for Wednesday. According to the Attorney General's Office, no further details will be released until completion.
