Many from across the valley gathered for the annual sunrise ceremony on October 1st.

Before dawn, the sound of bagpipes filled the area of the Clark County Government Center as dozens of people gathered in the amphitheater for a sunrise ceremony honoring the victims of the Oct. 1 mass shooting.

The ceremony was a joint effort between Clark County and the Las Vegas Metro Police Department. Sheriff Kevin Mcmahill served as master of ceremonies.

Several speakers took the podium, including Clark County Commissioner Tick Segerbloom, followed by a heartfelt speech from Michael Duarte. Duarte is the brother of Christiana Duarte, one of the 58 people killed when a gunman opened fire on the Las Vegas Strip.

The ceremony concluded with a moment of silence for the victims and a musical performance by Las Vegas-based country ensemble Thrillbilly Deluxe.

Many in the crowd were survivors. Rose Janies' daughter, Rylie, was shot that tragic night seven years ago but survived.

She said it was great to see the community coming together.

“It's really great to see everyone and Vegas is something you should never forget. Not just when it happened, but in the days after and how everyone came together and helped each other,” Janise said.

After the service, people streamed into the Government Center Rotunda to view conceptual images of the Forever One Memorial, which will be completed in three years.
