According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, a low pressure area over the western and southwestern Caribbean Sea could develop into a tropical depression in the Gulf of Mexico within a few days.

Hurricane forecasters said as of 7 a.m. Monday that the major low pressure system was disorganized as it battered the Caribbean with showers and thunderstorms. A low pressure area could form while the system is in the southern Gulf or northwest Caribbean.

There is a 40% chance of the system developing over the next week, according to forecasters. It poses no immediate threat to Louisiana.

Atlantic systems

Hurricane Isaac, two tropical depressions and a disturbance struck different parts of the Atlantic Ocean Monday morning. All systems are expected to stay away from land.

Isaac – the sixth named hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic season – continues to rage in open waters, moving east-northeast with a speed of 15 mph (24 km/h) and maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (65 km/h).

Meanwhile, Tropical Depression Joyce is shifting westward at a speed of 2 miles per hour, with maximum sustained wind speeds of 35 miles per hour, forecasters said. Another low pressure system, called Tropical Depression Twelve by forecasters, is also moving west at 8 miles per hour, with maximum sustained wind speeds of 35 miles per hour.

A tropical wave located several hundred miles south of the Cape Verde Islands is lashing the Atlantic with showers and thunderstorms. Meteorologists said there is an 80% chance of the wave developing into a depression within a week as it moves slowly westward across the eastern tropical Atlantic.
