Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson He may be healthy enough to play on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys, but that doesn't mean he'll take on a starting role with Pittsburgh.

ESPN insider Adam Schefter joined SportsCenter on Monday afternoon and revealed the latest on Russell Wilson's injury situation and the Steelers plan at quarterback.

According to Schefter, it would be a surprise if Justin Fields He won't start for the Steelers against the Cowboys and won't advance as long as he continues to play well.

Fields filled in for Wilson as the starting quarterback in Pittsburgh after Wilson suffered an injury in the preseason.

“Last week we heard Mike Tomlin say he wasn't ready to declare Justin Fields the No. 1 quarterback in Pittsburgh, but he's certainly played like it so far,” Schefter said. “It's been a week now, a Sunday night game against the Dallas Cowboys, where it was assumed that Russell Wilson would finally recover from his calf injury and be ready to play.

“So if Russell Wilson doesn't play on Sunday night, that would tell you that Justin Fields has, for now, taken the starting quarterback job away from Russell Wilson, who entered the season as the starter until he suffered a calf injury during training camp.”

Russell Wilson was named the Steelers' starting quarterback back in August before suffering an injury. Justin Fields stepped into a starting role in his absence and has been outstanding so far this year.

The former first-round pick of the Chicago Bears is 3-1 and the Steelers' starter. He has totaled six touchdowns and just one interception this season.

Even in Pittsburgh's only loss this year, which came on Sunday against the Colts, Fields had 312 passing yards and three total touchdowns.

“A lot of people around the league believe that it will be difficult to bench Justin Fields right now given the way he has been playing. “He has definitely risen to the challenge,” said Schefter. “It's hard to imagine him going up against a player who has gotten better, who has a 3-1 record in the first quarter of this season, who has played well and who currently has the support of his team.”

Whether next Sunday against the Cowboys or a week or two later, Schefter expects Justin Fields to continue starting for the Steelers even if Russell Wilson is healthy.

“At some point he’s going to have Russell Wilson as an option,” Schefter said of Steelers coach Mike Tomlin. “But I think it will be a surprise if Justin Fields doesn’t start on Sunday night.”
