Staying in character is a must for any actor, but Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh take it a step further.

The “We Live in Time” star opened up about filming a “very intimate, passionate sex scene” with his co-star Pugh during a Friday interview with Josh Horowitz on 92NY.

Garfield and Pugh play the unlikely lovers Tobias and Almut in the romantic drama directed by John Crowley. The film chronicles the couple's decade-long romance following a chance encounter.

Garfield said the first shot of his sex scene with Pugh, which he described as “very confident in her body and her sexuality,” took on a life of its own.

“The scene becomes more passionate as we choreograph it,” Garfield recalled telling Horowitz, according to footage shared on social media. “And we kind of embrace it and go a little further than we should just because we don't hear 'Cut' and it feels safe.”

And while the actors didn't mind continuing the scene, Garfield later said they were puzzled by the apparent lack of input from their cinematographer and cinematographer Stuart Bentley.

“At some point I think we both said telepathically, this definitely feels like a long time ago,” Garfield said.

The Oscar-nominated actor said he then looked up and saw Bentley and the film's boom operator in the corner of the room, looking away from the intimate scene. “Stuart has the camera at his side and he’s turned into the wall,” Garfield said.

How Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh bonded over “incredibly intimate” scenes

Garfield and Pugh discussed the vulnerability that comes with their We Live in Time roles in an interview with Esquire published Wednesday.

“We had to do the most intimate things that I think a human being has to do,” Garfield told the magazine, adding that Pugh “had to be on all fours and then naked in the toilet.” “And we have to have my face there , where I have my face, my hands where I have my hands, and the sex scenes have to be incredibly intimate.”

Pugh said the experience created a unique bond between the actors.

“We really felt supported by each other and I felt like my skills were respected and given back in his skills,” said Pugh, who hopes to work with Garfield on another project. “When we finished the job, we both felt what a great partnership we had created and how great it was to know we would do it again.”

“We Live in Time” is scheduled to hit theaters on October 11th.
