GOAL! Arsenal – Southampton 1:1 (58. Havertz)

Yes, Southampton scored too early. Kai Havertz has scored for the fourth game in a row to bring Arsenal level at the Emirates Stadium. Downes' lazy pass was intercepted by Partey, who quickly passed the ball to Havertz on the edge of the D. He moved the ball to his left foot and fired a shot from the inside of the post into the net. Ramsdale had no chance.

GOAL! Arsenal 0-1 Southampton (Archer 55)

Cameron Archer has given Southampton the lead at the Emirates! Fernandes released him on the left wing with an early crossfield pass. Archer cut inside, set up Saliba (I think) and directed a low shot into the far corner. Excellent finish.

“I think you're right about the extreme specificity of the role of the defensive midfielder,” says Phil Podolsky. “It is no coincidence that the two great DMs of Spanish football this century were coached by Guardiola. While Sergio Busquets was hesitant about joining Barcelona for a long time, he kept hearing that he should be moved to the role of which you have to accept when you receive the ball, that is too different!”

Yes, and I think the role is even more specific in a pep team.

GOAL! West Ham 3-1 Ipswich (Bowen 49)

West Ham are heading for their first home win under Julen Lopetegui. Michail Antonio forced the goalkeeper into a desperate free throw, which was saved by Bowen on the right wing. He moved into the penalty area and directed a beautiful left-footed shot into the far corner.

GOAL! Man City – Fulham 2:1 (47. Kovacic)

RODRI WHO? Mateo Kovacic scored a wonderful second goal to put City in the lead. Foden's cross was controlled by Bernardo Silva, who fended off the onrushing Kovacic on the edge of the D. He skillfully ignored Berge's challenge and fired emphatically past Bernd Leno.

“Do you need Rodri?” sniffs Zach Neeley. “Pep’s teams don’t need anyone! The whole effort is to prevent the need for a single player. The players don't even have to decide what they want to do, Pep tells them the script. He is a rock, he is an island. I think I understand him now, Pep and Paul Simon both like cable patterns.”

Man City 1-1 Fulham

“I've made this point before, but that a top team doesn't have a ready-made replacement for a key player – or even one who can take on 90 per cent of the role – and has to use a squarer peg in the left round hole “It borders on negligence, “especially when you have almost unlimited oil wealth,” says Andy Flintoff.

Perhaps the problem is that, because it is such a specific role, the substitute is unlikely to start more than ten games a season when Rodri is fit, and anyone worth a penny will deal with that not satisfied. There aren't many high-profile number 6 players who can also play a different role. Declan Rice, I guess, and City chose him, didn't they? I still do

Brentford scored straight from kick-off againbut this time it is the fifth goal of the game. Captain Christian Norgaard, back in the team today, gave Brentford the lead for the third time.

Both goals came when the opponent tried to play out and lost the ball. Jorgen Strand Larsen cleverly finished the ball at the near post; Norgaard passed the ball into the net after a pass from Vitaly Janelt.
