As a fan of Josh Jackson's projects dating back to Mighty Ducks, I wasn't expecting the Dawson's Creek vibes from ABC's Doctor Odyssey

Spoilers ahead for the series premiere of Doctor Odyssey on ABC.

One of the most hyped new ABC shows on the 2024 TV schedule was Doctor Odysseywhat brings Josh Jackson For the first time since then, a regular role in a network TV series Edge area. In the new medical drama, Jackson plays the overqualified Dr. Max Bankman after he becomes an onboard doctor on a glamorous cruise ship. While this isn't the first time Jackson has played a doctor, Doctor Odyssey certainly not Dr. Death. As someone who has enjoyed the actor's various projects since his time The mighty ducks When it was on VHS in the '90s, I expected the ABC drama to be a whole new character… and definitely didn't get one Dawson's Creek vibes.

To be clear – Doctor Odyssey is not Dawson's Creek: High Seas Continuing is Dr. Not Max Bankman Paceyand I'm not saying Joshua Jackson can only play one type of role. But two elements of the series premiere made me think back to his Pacey days, and the first was when he confided in a nurse Avery (Phillipa Soo) about where he learned to dance:

You know, I always wanted to take dance lessons as a kid, but where I grew up, boys don't really do that. And then one day I was tapped on the shoulder and gently reminded me that life is fleeting and incredibly fragile.

Max then shared an emotional story about how he was the first person in Connecticut to be diagnosed with COVID in early 2020 and how his experience led him to pursue joy at all costs…which for him was “very, very long-winded” I would like to say that I finally signed up for a dance class.

Admittedly, I can imagine Pacey wanting to pursue joy at all costs as he paid the price for neglecting his schoolwork, but his comment about dance class reminded me of that Dawson's Creek Episode where Pacey agreed to help Joey (Katie Holmes) by secretly being her partner at a dance class.

And then there's the fact that there's already a love triangle brewing between the three main characters of Doctor Odysseywith nurse Tristan (Sean Teale) has feelings for Avery, but Avery quickly develops a crush on Max (and Max looks back). When it comes to navigating complicated love triangles on television, Joshua Jackson has more experience than most after him Dawson's Creek Days when Pacey came out of nowhere and became the title character's romantic rival in the best possible way.

It's been a long, bumpy and sometimes ugly road between the flying sparks and the transformation of Joey and Pacey – Spoiler alert for Dawson's Creek – however, the endgame couple of the series, so I don't think I can be blamed for flashing back to it at the first hint of a love triangle Doctor Odyssey.

All in all, I enjoyed the pilot Doctor Odysseyand not because it reminded me of it Dawson's Creek. There were just a few parallels that struck me as a viewer of the teen drama at the time. My favorite line of the new series might actually be the very last part of the pilot episode, when Max asked, “Is every week a theme?” after Avery announced that next week would be Singles Week.
