The Sun and Lynx meet and a spot in the WNBA Finals is on the line Jenn Tran, Ilona Maher, Joey Graziadei

The Blues brought in several reinforcements this offseason to relieve pressure on Jordan Kyrou, Robert Thomas and others. This will only help make St. Louis a well-oiled machine and give them an edge over Seattle.

Two teams that watched this year's Stanley Cup Playoffs from the sidelines are hoping to change their fortunes in 2024-25 when the St. Louis Blues visit the Seattle Kraken to open their campaign.

While both teams made efforts to weaken their offensive attacks, our Blues vs. Kraken predictions lean on St. Louis dominating this matchup.

My analysis

After finishing 24th in scoring last year, St. Louis Blues general manager Doug Armstrong sought to bolster a roster with real talent by using offer sheets to acquire two recent first-round picks from the Oilers: Defenseman Phillip Broberg and forward Dylan Holloway, while trading for forwards Radek Faksa (Dallas) and Alexandre Texier (Columbus).

More offense can help protect the Blues' average defense, which was in the middle of the pack in goals allowed a season ago at 3.02 per game.

The Seattle Kraken's offense was even worse than St. Louis's last year, finishing 29th in scoring, with forwards Jared McCann and Oliver Bjorkstrand the only Kraken to score at least 20 goals this year.

The Kraken fired Dave Hakstol, the only head coach they've ever known, and replaced him with Dan Bylsma, who hopes to field a faster-paced offense while adding free agents Chandler Stephenson and Brandon Montour to the roster.

The Blues have won three straight meetings since joining the NHL in the 2022-23 season and are 7-2 in nine games against Seattle. Their offensive additions in support of players like Robert Thomas, Jordan Kyrou and Brayden Schenn – all of whom surpassed the 20-goal mark last year – will be more than enough to offset Seattle's opening day improvements.

Seattle has an 0-2-1 all-time record in the opening games of the season, although this is the team's first time playing at home. St. Louis has won three of the four meetings at Climate Pledge Arena.

The Kraken had the fourth-fewest home wins in the Western Conference a year ago, one less than the Blues on the road.

Blues money line

Jordan Kyrou a goal at any time

Robert Thomas Under 1.5 shots on goal

Kyrou led the Blues in scoring a season ago with 31 goals, and last year he lit the lamp in two of the three meetings with the Kraken.

He has five goals and one assist in eight career games against Seattle, including goals in three of the last four games.

Last season, Thomas was just outside the top 20 in scoring percentage, but he was just outside the top 130 in shots on goal, with 170 per year, an average of just over two shots per game.

He didn't manage to get even two shots on goal in any of their meetings with the Kraken, so we'll stick with that trend on Tuesday.
