Francisco Lindor is the team's MVP and perhaps captain in the future.

Pete Alonso, a two-time Home Run Derby winner and well-known slugger who has become a national figure, could be the face of the team.

In many ways, Brandon Nimmo is the heart of the team, and the strings were pulled on that heart in a euphoric scene for the Mets at Citi Field on Wednesday night.

It all rolled over Nimmo when Edwin Diaz pumped a fastball past Kyle Schwarber to secure a 4-1 victory over the Phillies and an NLDS victory that sent Nimmo to the NLCS for the first time in his nine years in Queens promoted.

A first-round pick from a Wyoming high school in 2011 helped bring his team to the precipice of the World Series 13 years later.

He knows the effort that goes into every game and every season.

All the work and all the moments big and small culminated in an NLCS trip that reduced the longest-serving Mets player to tears.

“When it's never been done before, you always wonder what it's like when it actually happens,” a red-eyed Nimmo said in a champagne-filled clubhouse. “There always seems to be a little bit out there, like you can't quite grasp it. What would it actually be like to hold on and hold on?

“When we were able to do that… the emotions that came over me – I tried not to worry about it, keep playing our game, the game isn't over yet, you always get through to the end – and the emotions, that poured over me were…”incredible.”

The Mets secured a spot in the playoffs in Atlanta.

They survived a wild card bout in Milwaukee.

For the first time in ballpark history, the Mets won a playoff series at Citi Field.

“Doing this for the first time in front of the fan base here at Citi Field is just a dream come true for me and everything I ever wanted when I got drafted,” Nimmo said.

The Mets got through the Phillies series the same way they got through everything this season: with maximum theatrics.

They dug a hole and trailed 1-0 after five innings before Lindor hit a go-ahead grand slam in the sixth inning.

Edwin Diaz flirted with disaster late, and the Mets, part of their brand, continued to breathe.

Nimmo was looking forward to a matchup against the Padres or Dodgers and didn't care what awaited the Mets.

This moment meant a lot to him, but he hopes for more.

“We believe we have as good a chance as anyone else. That’s what we thought from the start,” said Nimmo, whose team will be in the final four. “This is amazing and we'll soak it up… but it's just the next step in the journey.” And we have no intention of just settling here and lying down.

“We’re going to go out there and give it everything we’ve got.”
