One of the WNBA's most intriguing storylines this season took some unexpected twists on Monday.

On September 24, USA Today reporter Christine Brennan sparked league-wide controversy when she questioned Connecticut Sun guard DiJonai Carrington about poking Caitlin Clark in the eye during Game 1 of the Indiana Fever vs. Sun WNBA playoff series .

Brennan's doing this – prompting the WNBA Players Association (WNBPA) to denounce her on social media – also reportedly led to an altercation with Suns forward DeWanna Bonner.

Brennan appeared on an October 7 episode of the Good Game With Sarah Spain podcast. She subsequently said of the exchange with Bonner: “I wouldn't call it, um, heated. I would call it a person who comes up to me to talk to me,” says an X post from Spain.

The Spanish post then added: “Two sources have since confirmed that Christine has filed a complaint with the league regarding the exchange (with Bonner).”

News of Brennan filing a complaint spread like wildfire throughout the women's basketball community on Monday. Until Brennan rejected Spain's claim to a complaint.

“Hello Sarah, that’s inaccurate. It's wrong. I have not filed a complaint. I haven't contacted anyone in the league. Your sources are wrong. You and I have had a long and good relationship, which is why I always enjoy talking to you. Why didn't you call me before you posted this?” Brennan said Monday.

It appears that there are more layers to this controversy yet to unfold. Perhaps the next step is for the WNBA to investigate whether a complaint has been filed.
