The San Diego Padres' playoff game against the Los Angeles Dodgers was suspended for nearly 10 minutes after fans threw baseballs and beer at a player.

Game two of the National League Division Series was delayed in the seventh inning when Padres' Jurickson Profar was heckled by Dodgers fans.

Profar angered fans at Dodger Stadium when he caught Mookie Betts' hit by leaning over the billboards and cheering.

The 31-year-old skipped away with the ball in his hand and maintained eye contact with the home crowd.

Tensions threatened to spill over in the sixth inning when Dodgers pitcher Jack Flaherty and Padres baseman Manny Machado became involved in an angry exchange.

Machado accused Flaherty of intentionally shooting hitter Fernando Tatis in the body with his pitch, a practice known as “plunking.”

The incident stoked the anger of the home crowd and the game was stopped in the seventh inning when a fan hurled a baseball in Profar's direction. When Profar tried to notify the referee, another one was thrown at him.

Profar was escorted away from the home fans by security and the Padres outfielders gathered as a unit, but after they finally dispersed, the Dodgers fan threw beer at Profar.

“There’s a lot to say,” Dodgers starting pitcher Flaherty said.

“Firstly, fans should never interfere. There’s no reason to ever throw anything at players, no matter what’s going on.”

Tatis said, “Man, it was definitely wild out there, but at the same time it's a good environment for baseball.”

“People get a little carried away with their emotions, but it's a good back and forth. At the end of the day, it's a show.”

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said, “I've seen over a thousand games here – well over a thousand games in a ballpark – and I've never seen anything like this.”

The Padres won the second game 10-2, evening the best-of-five series at one game apiece.

They host the next two games in San Diego.
