An MLS game between FC Cincinnati and New York City FC on Wednesday was abandoned due to discriminatory comments from the crowd at Red Bull Arena, prompting a PA reprimand.

After the game, a 3-2 victory for NYCFC, Cincinnati released a statement denouncing fans' “abusive language toward one of our players” and thanking officials for their quick action. The full statement:

“During today's game against New York City FC, the game was stopped by the referee due to offensive comments made by fans towards one of our players. The club strongly condemns these statements and behavior by NYCFC fans and will always support us.” Players.

“The club praises the quick actions taken by the players and officials on the pitch. Abuse has absolutely no place on or off the field, in our league or in our communities.”

Carter Chapley, a Cincinnati employee, speculated that the player and the language in question was an anti-gay slur directed at Cincinnati star Luciano Acosta, the reigning MLS MVP and three-time All-Star.

MLS later released its own statement confirming the incident was a homophobic slur directed at a player, but only described the source as a bystander. The league said it is working with club and stadium staff to identify anyone involved in the incident:

“Major League Soccer is aware of an incident at today's New York City FC vs. FC Cincinnati game in which a spectator made a homophobic insult to a player. MLS unequivocally condemns hate speech of any kind and does not tolerate offensive, derogatory or threatening comments.” MLS targets players, clubs or other individuals associated with the league and is working closely with clubs and stadium staff to identify any individuals involved. Hate and bigotry have no place in our sport, in our communities or in society as a whole. “

Insults are not unprecedented for the MLS or the soccer world at large, with incidents involving players, coaches and, in this case allegedly, fans.
