Champions League Wednesday: Prince William watches Aston Villa, Real Madrid suffers a surprising defeat Chris Godwin vs. Dee Alford WR/CB matchup with next-gen stats

play

HARRISON, N.J. – FC Cincinnati has two games left in the regular season, and instead of finding the best version of itself before the postseason, the task now might be to simply stabilize.

FC Cincinnati lost its second straight game with a 3-2 loss to New York City FC on Wednesday. The game was played in front of a sparse crowd at Red Bull Arena, home of the New York Red Bulls, due to potential conflicts with NYCFC's other home stadium options.

Amid a slow start for FC Cincinnati, Mitja Ilenič scored the hosts' lead in the 18th minute. Alonso Martinez doubled NYCFC's lead in the 65th minute as FCC's attack continued to falter.

A Luciano Acosta penalty goal in the 69th minute gave Cincinnati salvation, but the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervened about five minutes later and awarded a questionable penalty for NYCFC, which Santiago Rodriguez converted to make it 3-0 in the 75th minute became. 1 line.

After the game was interrupted due to an incident in the stands (more on that below), Corey Baird scored his second goal of the year in eight minutes of injury time to make it 3-2. Addition time then seemed to be extended to 13 minutes.

The bottom line is that FC Cincinnati didn't have enough time to equalize.

With the win, NYCFC guaranteed that it would finish no lower than seventh in the Eastern Conference standings. This means avoiding the wildcard play-in game between numbers 8 and 9, which is a significant incentive.

The loss dropped FC Cincinnati to 17-10-5 in MLS play.

An ugly incident in the stands

Around the 86th minute, the game was interrupted by center official Guido Gonzales Jr. due to discriminatory comments from the stands of the Red Bull Arena.

FC Cincinnati Team Beat reporter Carter Chapley reported that he believed a homophobic slur was directed at Acosta.

The referee approached the sideline between both benches and conferred with FC Cincinnati head coach Pat Noonan and NYCFC manager Nick Cushing. An MLS official then passed on the order for the speaker to address the matter to the entire stadium.

After this news broke, play resumed with an FC Cincinnati drop ball in the 90th minute.

The Enquirer will update this report.

NYCFC is two goals ahead (75th minute)

Santiago Rodriguez was the beneficiary when the video assistant referee (VAR) re-examined a moment from several minutes ago and ultimately determined that an NYCFC player was tripping in the FC Cincinnati penalty area. Rodriguez used the resulting free kick to restore his side's two-goal lead 3-1.

Maybe there will be a comeback in this game (69.)

NYCFC doubles its lead (65th)

It's hard to imagine FC Cincinnati coming back from this deficit considering what they've produced so far tonight. FC Cincinnati fell behind 2-0 when Alonso Martinez made a fierce attack that hit and smashed into the underside of Roman Celentano's crossbar.

A dreary first half for FC Cincinnati

There aren't many updates for this game in the first half. That's because the game wasn't particularly good and FC Cincinnati only managed two shots on goal.

Teenage Hadebe's debut start for Cincinnati is over early in the second half, with Yamil Asad in relief.

A lead goal for NYCFC (16th minute)

With no defender there to stop him, Mitja Ilenič hit the far post of FCC goalkeeper Roman Celentano's net and scored the first MLS goal of his career. The score is 1-0 for the hosts.
