It was a frightening moment.

No one expected Kamala Harris to come under fire on “The View,” made up of cheerleaders for her candidacy.

But Whoopi Goldberg introduced her by shouting “the next President of the United States,” it was a slap in the face.” Seriously?

Yesterday's entire session was an in-kind contribution to the Harris campaign.

THE CHALLENGE OF KAMALA 2.0? MAKE MORE NEWS, AND NOT JUST WITH SUPER FRIENDLY HOSTS

I know they are not straight journalists, they are liberal commentators and entertainers. They read their questions verbatim from blue cards. That's exactly why she wanted to do the show.

There were some legitimate questions: How would her presidency differ from Joe Biden's? How would she deal with the border? Why wasn't Ron DeSantis taking their calls about hurricane preparations when a Category 4 storm was about to hit Florida?

And then there was Joy Behar, talking about Trump's lies and asking how anyone could support him. That allowed the vice president to say that Trump was all about personal grievances, not voters.

Harris talks to The View

Vice President Kamala Harris appeared on Tuesday's episode of “The View.” (ABC)

Kamala used the forum well, for example, talking about how she was training and interacting with her children when Joe Biden called to say he was resigning.

Bottom line: “The View,” an ABC show founded by Barbara Walters – she's still in the news department – was even more embarrassing than I expected, with the ladies going out of their way to praise Harris and denigrate Trump .

There were some reasonable questions asked, but Kamala skirted around them, deflecting what she didn't want to answer while making her familiar arguments.

It was a good forum for her, and for once she was willing to make headlines. In a move previously leaked to Politico, Harris advocated for Medicare to reimburse care for the elderly at home, not just in expensive facilities – the first new policy proposal she has made in weeks. She said she would pay for it by demanding higher discounts on certain drugs covered by Medicare. Needless to say, she wasn't exactly cross-examined on the subject.

The ladies seemed impressed that Kamala Harris was even there.

It was a very different Kamala who appeared on the prime-time show “60 Minutes” the night before.

Of course, the newsmagazine repeated some of their criticisms of Trump, with Bill Whitaker saying, “They have accused Donald Trump of using racist language when it comes to Haitian immigrants. In Springfield, Ohio. When it comes to birtherism, when.” When it comes to Charlottesville, you actually called him a racist and a divisive man, and yet Donald Trump has the support of millions and millions of Americans.

The Veep's main response: “I believe that the people of America want a leader who won't try to divide and demean us.”

But Whitaker was a bulldog when it came to repeatedly asking for further answers when the Democratic nominee made general comments.

Asked about the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget's statement that her plan would raise $3 trillion over the next decade – for Trump it was much more – Harris talked about how economists liked her plan and moved on to it to praise small businesses.

Whitaker’s response: “Excuse me, Madam Vice President. The question was, how are you going to pay for it?”

This time, Harris said she would make sure billionaires and big corporations pay their “fair share,” and Whitaker expressed skepticism that Congress would agree to that.

That was the question Harris didn't really have to answer.

“Let me tell you what your critics and columnists are saying, okay? They say so many voters don’t know you because you’ve changed your position on so many things,” Whitaker said. “They were against fracking. Now you are for it. You supported looser immigration policies, now you're tightening them. They are for Medicare for All. Now there aren't so many of you that people don't really know what you believe or what you stand for.

Harris responded: “For the last four years, I have been Vice President of the United States. And I traveled our country. And I listened to people and looked for what was possible in terms of common ground. I believe in building consensus.” Translation: The world has changed and I have to be realistic about what I can achieve.

The interview was so heavily edited that you could see the changes multiple times as Harris magically limited her answers to two sentences. This is the overproduced “60 Minutes” style, but I think it was a mistake. CBS should have shown all or a large portion of it unedited.

Scott Pelley said Trump agreed to an interview but backed away with varying explanations, including that there was no fact-checking.

Yesterday afternoon, Kamala recorded her interview with Howard Stern, who loved Trump, back when women were judged, and who completely rejected him as a candidate and president.

Responding to Bob Woodward's upcoming book that says Trump secretly sent Vladimir Putin a COVID testing machine during the pandemic – something the former president denies – the vice president said: “I believe that Donald Trump has a desire to have one to be a dictator. He admires strong men and he gets that played by them because he thinks they are his friends and they manipulate him full-time and manipulate him through flattery and favor…

“This guy who is president of the United States is sending them to Russia? To a murderous dictator for his personal use?”

Stern called it “insane” and “insane” that anyone would support Donald Trump. He told Harris he would vote for her but could also vote for “that wall over there” instead of the ex-president.

Harris is finally starting to make headlines. Imagine if she had started some of these interviews weeks ago.
