Michigan football canceled its national championship rematch against Washington on Saturday.

The Wolverines recovered from an early deficit to take a 17-14 lead, but were sent off as Washington scored twice in the fourth quarter to secure a 27-17 win. It is Michigan's (4-2, 2-1 Big Ten) first conference loss and Washington (4-2, 2-1 Big Ten) avenged its January loss in the 2023 national championship, 34-13.

The Huskies shut down Michigan early, building an early 14-0 lead with touchdowns to Denzel Boston and Giles Jackson. Michigan responded by benching quarterback Alex Orji in favor of seventh-grader Jack Tuttle, which led to a touchdown drive thanks to a long home call from Donovan Edwards. Michigan ended the half with a 45-yard field goal by Dominic Zvada and blocked a field goal attempt by Washington.

Michigan opened the second half with a long touchdown drive that ended with a Colston Loveland touchdown to take its first lead. Washington started the fourth quarter with a field goal, tying the game at 17. Washington broke the tie in the fourth quarter by forcing a Tuttle fumble in Michigan territory and Jonah Coleman scored a touchdown on the ground four plays later.

It was Michigan's first road game of the season, played statewide in Seattle, and Michigan could not withstand the test. The Wolverines now fall to 4-2 under Moore, with losses to two of the other 2023 CFP participants, Washington and Texas.

Michigan vs. Washington game recap, highlights

Washington's early field goal woes are a thing of the past and the Huskies will avenge their national championship loss to Michigan.

Washington took more than two minutes of rest and then took a two-score lead on a 32-yard field goal by Grady Gross, who finished the game with 2 of 4 field goals.

The Wolverines may have just made the fatal mistake. Kamren Fabiculanan intercepted a Tuttle pass on an out, putting Washington in possession in Michigan territory with under three minutes left. Fabiculanan made a great play, diving in front of Colston Loveland for the interception.

The Huskies were almost stopped on fourth down, but Kalel Mullings crossed the line just before the interception and converted the game. The referees ruled Mullings had a first down on third down, but it was ruled shortly after the review.

The Tuttle fumble failed immediately. Coleman drove Washington 32 yards to the end zone in three plays to take the lead. He managed a 27-yard run to the Michigan 5 to start the drive, then ran through Kenneth Grant two plays later for what was ruled a touchdown, but called after the review at the 1-yard line. Coleman then jumped over the line one play later and scored the decisive touchdown.

Michigan's new quarterback made his first big mistake in a huge moment.

Jack Tuttle stepped into the pocket and tried to scramble, but the hole collapsed and defensive tackle Voi Tunuufi knocked the ball free and another Washington defender jumped on it at the Michigan 32-yard line.

Michigan's offense ended with a three-pointer after Washington's field goal, but the defense made a big play. As Washington advanced into the red zone, Will Rogers attempted to throw a pass into a tight window over the middle, but Hausmann was ready and leapt to snatch the possession.

We have a draw in Seattle.

Washington slowly advanced into Michigan territory with a 12-play, 45-yard drive that ended with the Huskies' first successful field goal on their third attempt. Mason Graham sparked Washington's offense with a sack on second-and-goal from the ten-and-goal line with a powerful bull rush through the right guard and center into the lap of Will Rogers behind the uprights.

Michigan opened the second half with a long touchdown drive and took its first lead.

The Wolverines gained 75 yards in 11 plays, taking over six minutes and ending the drive with an 8-yard touchdown pass to tight end Colston Loveland. He rolled to his right to avoid the pressure and floated it to a wide-open Loveland on the edge of the end zone. Tuttle ripped off two passes to Armorion Walker and Semaj Morgan for the largest lead on the drive.

Michigan's big men in the middle of the defensive line had another big play.

Washington moved quickly down the field with three passes for first downs to get into field goal range before halftime, but Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant blew up the blocking unit in the middle of the field goal on the 28-yard attempt Graham got his hand on the ball for the block. Michigan started clicking in the second quarter after switching to Jack Tuttle at quarterback.

Michigan has some life now.

The Wolverines forced a three-and-out and Michigan managed a 56-yard drive to reach Washington's 27-yard line, but got nowhere, settling for a 45-yard field goal from Dominiz Zvada. Donovan Edwards had the first down run and catch on the drive and Jack Tuttle completed two of three passes.

Just like the last time these two teams met, Donovan Edwards is the first player to provide a spark for Michigan. Edwards ran down the right side for a 39-yard touchdown. Michigan made a quarterback switch, benching Alex Orji in favor of Jack Tuttle after the offense's initial struggles, which paid off with an immediate touchdown drive.

Nothing has gone well for Michigan so far. After another quick punt from the offense, Washington drove 74 yards in four plays and found the end zone with a back-shoulder pass to Giles Jackson, who lined up to make the catch at the pylon. Jackson transferred from Michigan to Washington in 2021.

Michigan's offense has 47 yards on three drives.

Washington put together a 13-play, 83-yard touchdown drive to take the lead over Michigan. Will Rogers ended the drive with a back-shoulder fade to Denzel Boston in the corner of the end zone and the wide receiver made the toe-tapping catch to give the Huskies the lead. Rogers opened the game with a 39-yard completion to former Michigan receiver Giles Jackson on third-and-11 and another third-down completion for Boston to reach the red zone.

Michigan had two first downs on its first offensive drive, but Alex Orji missed a third-and-4 pass at Washington's 45-yard line, leading to a punt.

Michigan's defense held Washington to zero points despite giving up an explosive lead on the first play. Will Rogers started the drive with a deep shot to Denzel Boston for 36 yards, followed by a 10-yard run by Jonah Coleman to reach field goal range. But Michigan's defense held firm there and Washington kicker Grady Gross kicked a 41-yard field goal to keep the game scoreless.

Pregame notes on the Michigan vs. Washington football game

As frustrated as Michigan fans are with the offensive woes and early loss, Washington is off to a tougher start to recapturing the 2023 magic. The Huskies are 3-2 and have lost 21-18 to rival Washington State and Big Ten foe Rutgers, which came on the road last week.

Michigan players and coaches are excited about the change of scenery after the first five games were played exclusively at Michigan Stadium. Michigan is 17-2 in the last three and a half years outside of Ann Arbor, with both losses coming in the College Football Playoff.

Michigan's offense still has some things to figure out after narrowly escaping Minnesota last Saturday. It took an early lead again, but couldn't keep its foot on the pedal as the Gophers cleared things up, scoring three touchdowns. Orji once again threw for less than 100 yards as the Wolverines stuck to a smashmouth attack out of necessity.

Michigan vs Washington predictions

Tony Garcia, Detroit Free Press: It would be foolish to exclude Michigan from any game, but winning this game will be a challenge. It's a 2,000-mile journey into a hostile environment against a program looking to avenge a loss in a CFP championship game in January. U-Dub moved the ball well in the air and Michigan was vulnerable to the pass. If UM doesn't take an early lead, the second-half struggles of the last two weeks point to a possible collapse. Simply put, it's hard to win at Husky Stadium, where U-Dub has won 17 straight games. The choice: Washington 26, AT 20.
