Geno Smith's career night wasn't good enough in the Seattle Seahawks' loss

Geno Smith probably wishes he could play all of his away games at Ford Field.

Smith had another brilliant performance against the Detroit Lions on Monday night. He had the best game of his career in the Seahawks' 42-29 loss.

In short: Smith was sensational. He completed 38 of 56 passes for 395 yards (all career highs) with one touchdown and one interception in garbage time. Many of his completions came under heavy pressure from the Lions – the Lions recorded nine quarterback hits and defensive end Aidan Hutchinson was credited with ten pressures.

Smith had to use his legs to escape pressure and extend plays against the Lions' aggressive pass rush. After escaping the initial onslaught, he remained stable and made a series of precise throws on the move.

“I thought he was confident, thought he was right. I thought he had a great game,” Seattle coach Mike Macdonald told reporters after the game. “I don’t know the stats, but I thought he played really well.”

Smith's performance against the Lions should come as no surprise to anyone who has done any research. Smith has been phenomenal against the Lions over the last three seasons.

Last year, Smith completed 32 of 41 passes for 328 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions with a passer rating of 116.3 in the Seahawks' 37-31 overtime win at Detroit in Week 2. He completed 23 of 30 passes for 320 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions with a 132.6 rating in a 48-45 victory during the Week 4 win at Detroit in 2022.

Smith has completed 93 of 127 passes for 1,043 yards with five touchdown passes and a rushing touchdown and a late-game interception in three trips to one of the loudest domed stadiums in the NFL.

“I think it tests your will, it tests your communication. It's super loud. I feel like I'm screaming in the crowd just to get the word out, and then on the edge of the line, voice inflection to make sure all the guys can hear me, and then there's something about those environments that just “Recharging just makes you want to go out there and perform and we're really looking forward to every opportunity, but especially the great away games in places like Detroit,” Smith told reporters last week.

The only change from the first two games? Smith and the Seahawks lost their first game of the season, but Smith is far from discouraged.

“There are three of us and one, that’s what they say, and now we have to move on to the next one. This is just football, this is NFL football,” Smith told reporters after the game. “I think the only team that went undefeated was the '72 Dolphins, so we're just trying to go out and win every game we can. We didn’t make it today, but that’s why we have next week, so we’ll improve, keep going and prepare for next week.”
