Green Day was banned from the playlists of two Las Vegas radio stations after frontman Billie Joe Armstrong reportedly called the city “the worst shithole in America.”

The singer made the comment while Green day were on stage in San Francisco, CaliforniaAccording to US media reports, on September 20th.

“We're not going to put up with people like fucking John Fisher, who sold the Oakland A's to fucking Las Vegas,” Armstrong was quoted as saying by People. “I hate Las Vegas. It's the worst shithole in America.

Armstrong, who was born in Oakland, was apparently referring to John Fisher, the current owner of the Oakland A's, a team that has been based in the California city for more than 100 years.

In April 2023, a planned move to the Las Vegas Strip was announced, to the New Las Vegas Stadium in Nevada, which will open in 2028. The controversial move was met with some criticism from fans.

“We’re pulling the plug”

Now, Las Vegas radio stations KOMP 92.3 and X107.5 have said they will no longer play Green Day's music.

“KOMP 92.3 has removed all Green Days from our playlist. “It’s not us, Billie, it’s you,” rock station KOMP 92.3 said in a post shared on Instagram.

Next to a photo of the band emblazoned with the word “BANNED,” X107.5 read “BYE BYE, BILLIE.”

The statement continued: “After Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day disrespected Las Vegas, we are pulling the plug on ALL music. No more Green Day on X107.5.”

The post then asked followers to have their say.

However, it seems that many fans disagreed with the decision.

“He expresses what he thinks about it and your reaction is to ban their music,” one said. “He wasn’t wrong. If you want to focus on newer music, that's fine. Just don’t blame it on artists’ politics, or you’ll quickly run out of artists to play.”

“A punk musician comments on the relocation of sports teams and you react sensitively to it. Yes. Ok,” said another.

The Oakland A's played their last game in the city over the weekend. According to the Associated Press, they will move to Sacramento for three seasons, with an option for a fourth, before moving to Las Vegas.

After the final game in Oakland, Fisher released a statement to fans saying the decision to leave had been “very difficult” – and that bosses had tried to find a new home in the area but were “falling short.” came”.

“I can tell you this from the bottom of my heart: We tried,” he said. “Staying in Oakland was our goal… and we didn't achieve it. And I’m really sorry about that.”
