LOS ANGELES – Halloween is just around the corner and to get us all in the spooky spirit, “Hold Your Breath” is coming to Hulu.

The film's star, Emmy-winning actress Sarah Paulson, plays a mother who becomes convinced that a sinister presence is threatening her family during 1930s Oklahoma, amid the region's terrible dust storms.

“Hold Your Breath” is terrifying, Paulson told Spectrum News, but it’s not your average slasher film.

“It’s visceral. It's a film with a real soul. “It’s not a boo-boo type horror movie,” she said. “It’s more of a horror of the mind. It’s about a woman who does everything she can to protect her children in extreme circumstances.”

This isn't the first time Paulson has played a mother. In “Run,” she played Diane Sherman, whom Paulson described as a crazed lunatic who was more aware of the engine in her brain that caused her to do what she did.

In “Hold Your Breath,” Margaret (Paulson) desperately tries to suppress her grief over the loss of a child.

“What's happening to Margaret is a little more innocent and has its roots in something more painful,” Paulson said. “What drew me to it was the idea of having the opportunity to play a mother again without the same kind of darkness that really comes from wanting to save her children and not really wanting to save her child damage.”

“Hold Your Breath” may be a psychological thriller, but it doesn't shy away from touching on themes such as man-made climate catastrophe, family and faith.

For Paulson, the film's themes resonate in today's world. For her, the idea of community and how you can be so disconnected in a community of very like-minded people struck a chord. In “Hold Your Breath,” for example, the loss of a child caused Paulson's character to become hypervigilant and hyper-focused on cleanliness… keeping everything in check while other members of the community gave in to reality. Margaret, Paulson said, continued to fight it — creating a disconnect between her and the people around her.

“All of the themes in the film are certainly relevant and impactful in today’s society,” she said. “I was interested in everything. There was nothing about it that didn't appeal to me. That’s why I wanted to do it.”

“Hold Your Breath” is now streaming on Hulu. Also starring are Amiah Miller, Annaleigh Ashford, Alona Jane Robbins and Emmy Award winner Ebon Moss-Bachrach (“The Bear”).
