Scattered thunderstorms brought some gusty winds and much-needed rain to parts of central and eastern Iowa late Thursday and early Friday morning.

After this summer's drought completely disappeared, dry weather has crept back into the state in recent weeks.

What was the rainfall in Des Moines?

Des Moines has received 0.24 inches of rain since Thursday.

The last time the city saw more than a trace of rain was Sept. 22, when 0.31 inches was recorded. According to the National Weather Service, a total of 0.6 inches of rain fell in September, far less than the 3.18 inches typical for Des Moines.

Ankeny reported 0.05 inches of rain and Ames received no rain.

How much rain did Iowa get?

The isolated storms brought less than an inch of rain to cities across the state.

According to the Iowa Environmental Mesonet, this is where the most rain fell in all of Iowa:

  • Burlington: 0.8 inches
  • Ottumwa: 0.71 inches
  • Oskaloosa: 0.44 inches
  • Mount Pleasant: 0.37 inches
  • Nutmeg: 0.28 inches

Iowa City reported 0.21 inches of rain.

What is the forecast for the weekend?

Much of Iowa will remain sunny through the weekend.

Overnight rain will keep temperatures slightly cooler for Friday, with a high near 75 degrees.

Summer weather returns Saturday with sunny skies and high temperatures near 90 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. On Sunday it will cool down again with high temperatures around 74 degrees.

Iowa State football fans will experience a warm tailgate in Ames on Saturday with high temperatures nearing 90 degrees. The temperature could still be over 80°C at kickoff on Saturday evening.

Iowa City will see highs of around 88 degrees on Saturday, with temperatures dropping back into the mid-70s on Sunday.
