Kaouk's death has not been confirmed by Hezbollah, but his supporters posted messages of condolence since Saturday

The Israeli military said on Sunday it had neutralized Hezbollah commander Nabil Kaouk, Reuters reported.

Hezbollah has not confirmed Kaouk's death, but his followers have posted messages of condolence since Saturday, the report added. Kaouk was deputy chairman of Hezbollah's Central Council.

From 1995 to 2010, Kaouk was also Hezbollah's military commander in southern Lebanon.

In 2020, the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on him and another Hezbollah Council member, Hassan al-Baghdadi.

Kaouk's elimination came after the head of the Iran-backed Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, was eliminated in a massive airstrike by the Israeli military on Friday.

It is not the first time that Israel has killed a Hezbollah leader. Nasrallah replaced Abbas Mousawi, who was killed in an Israeli helicopter attack in 1992.

Conflict between Israel and Hezbollah

Israel says it continues to carry out targeted attacks on Hezbollah in Lebanon. According to an AP report, hundreds of thousands of people in Lebanon have been displaced due to the conflict.

The country's environment minister, Nasser Yassin, said the government estimated that about 250,000 people had left their homes and sought refuge in government-run shelters and informal shelters. However, he told the Associated Press the total was about “four times as many directly affected and/or displaced people outside of shelters.”

According to the United Nations, 211,319 people had been forced to relocate as of Friday, and that came before several intense Israeli airstrikes on Beirut's southern suburbs in recent days.

The Lebanese government has converted schools and other facilities into emergency shelters. Still, many sleep on the streets or in public places while the government and non-governmental organizations try to find accommodation for them.
